Monday, June 2   Pre-Conference Expeditions

The Real Deadwood

This expedition begins at the Homestake Mine's Open Cut in Lead.   Participants will learn the history and impact of mining in the Black Hills.   Dr. David Wolff will then lead the group on a walking tour of Deadwood, focusing on the area's colorful characters, unique architecture, and economic transformations.   A tour of the Adam's Museum will conclude this historic expedition.

Time:   1:00 - 4:00 P.M.     Cost:   $25/participant.     Limited to:   25 participants.

Starting Point:   Homestake Mine Visitor Center in Lead.    Ending Point:   Adam's Museum in Deadwood.

Crazy Horse Memorial

Crazy Horse Memorial is the largest mountain carving in the world.   This guided expedition will help you explore the history behind the memorial as well as its diverse educational and historical resources.   You will be driven to the top of the carving to stand on the arm of Crazy Horse as you consider the history and culture of the North American Indian.   The expedition will conclude with a brief biography of Crazy Horse offered by a blood relative, Mr. Donovin Sprague.

Time:   1:00 - 4:00 P.M.     Cost:   $50/participant (Includes entrance fee).     Limited to:   25 participants.

Starting Point and Ending Point:    The Mountain View Room in the lower level of the Crazy Horse Memorial Visitor Center.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Rhonda Schier, Acting Chief of Interpretation at Mt. Rushmore, will guide you through a behind-the-scenes look at the Shrine of Democracy.   From the Sculptor's Studio to the Memorial Archives, you will experience Mt. Rushmore from a new perspective.  

Time:   1:00 - 4:00 P.M.     Cost:   $50/participant (Includes parking pass).     Limited to:   25 participants.

Starting Point and Ending Point:     The Carvers' Café at the entrance to the memorial.
